Welcome to the SLSS Leaving Certificate Chemistry Support Service Website

New Service Provision for Teachers

The Second Level Support Service (SLSS) extend its gratitude to all of you that supported the work of the service throughout the years since its establishment in 2001. A new cross - sectoral service, the Professional Development Service for Teachers  (PDST) was established in September 2010. The PDST subsumed much of the work of the SLSS.

The PDST is happy to inform you that the resources, materials and functionalities of this website will continue to be available to you in the future.

The aim of the support service is to provide teachers with continuous professional development.  If you believe there is a need for support in a particular area please place a notice on the “forum” on our website http://chemistry.slss.ie . Further support is offered through the online magazine 'Physical Sciences'.  A consultation service is also available by fax. phone or email.

PDST Chemistry Resource/Numeracy and Literacy Workshops From March 1st evening meetings will take place in every Education Centre in the country. Each of these meeting will consist of a workshop to explore the use of resources produced by a team of experienced Chemistry Teachers. These resources include:
(i) Updated PowerPoint presentations with embedded Numeracy and Literacy suggestions, (ii) Past LC Exams and Solutions, (iii) DARTS in various topics, (iv) Flash Animations, (v) Images, (vi) Video clips for each of the sections in the Chemistry syllabus, (vii)TV Programs BBC History of the Atom (3 episodes) and History of Periodic Table (3 episodes), (viii) Transition Year material, (ix) Practical Videos,(x) Flash cards for Mobile phones,(xi) Sample lesson Plans
Participants will investigate how these resources could be used to stimulate and support the enhancement of literacy and numeracy in Chemistry.
There will also be instructions on how to download a wealth of Chemistry resources from the Chemistry website and the software required to do this will be available. Teachers will get the opportunity to log on to and explore the ichemistry website. These workshops are organised in partnership with the Education Centres and with the local branches of the ISTA.
Take this opportunity to meet like-minded chemistry teachers in your area. If you have resources that you use in your classroom this will be an opportunity to share them with others.

We will be on hand to listen to your ideas and needs and will try to respond accordingly. Local Facilitators will be teachers who respond to an open invitation to contribute to CPD in their subject or programme areas or other areas where they have expertise and willingness to contribute. If you wish to become a Local Facilitator in Chemistry please email timregan@slss.ie  or brendanduane@slss.ie.

If you do not personally receive information regarding courses and upcoming Network Meetings then send me your details by email to brendanduane@slss.ie and I will place you on our database. A teacher's reference handbook Chemistry

This handbook, produced as part of the Department of Education and Science’s Equality of Opportunity Programme, is available under the Resources link on the left hand side of this page.  It is hoped that the material contained in this resource will assist teachers in presenting chemistry in a manner which will give due cognisance to gender differences in relation to interests and attitudes. It is also hoped that the material will help teachers in their continuing quest to develop new approaches to their teaching which will make chemistry more interesting and exciting for all their students.
